NEWS RELEASE

New Release Sunday, January 10, 2010 – 12:00 p.m.

*** COLD FRONT TO BRING LOWER TEMPERATURES AND POSSIBLE FLOODING ***

FLASH FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FOR NORTHERN AND SOUTHEASTERN PARISHES.

The Meteorological Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for low-lying and flood-prone areas of Hanover, St. James, Trelawny, St. Ann, St. Mary, Portland and St. Thomas until 5:00 p.m. tomorrow.

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH means that flash flooding is possible and residents are advised to take precautionary measures, keep informed by listening to further releases from the Meteorological Service and be ready for quick action if flooding is observed or if a Warning is issued.

A strong Cold Front across Jamaica is expected to influence weather conditions across the island today, tonight and tomorrow. Radar reports and satellite imagery indicate that light to moderate and occasionally heavy showers have been affecting sections of northern parishes.

The Frontal System is expected to linger across the central Caribbean including Jamaica until Tuesday. Consequently, the forecast is for frequent showers, along with isolated thunderstorms, mainly across northern parishes with cloudy conditions and scattered showers for southern parishes. Gusty winds and a significant fall in temperature are likely, especially over northern parishes today and tomorrow.

Fishers and other marine interests are advised to exercise caution, as gusty winds and rough seas are likely in the vicinity of showers and thunderstorms, especially over northern waters.

The Meteorological Service will continue to monitor the situation.
